Collective Arising: The Insistence of Black Bay Area Artists

June 25 - November 27, 2022

Co-curated by Ashara Ekundayo and Lucia Olubunmi R. Momoh

Collective Arising: The Insistence of Black Bay Area Artists features art by contemporary Black artists who have participated in interdisciplinary collectives, including nure, 3.9 Collective, House of Malico, CTRL+SHIFT, and Black [Space] Residency. Collectives—groups of like-minded individuals coming together to achieve a common goal—have offered space for Black artists to expand their practice, amplify their voices, and nurture one another. Working in community, they share resources, build cooperatively, and create side-by-side in opposition to hyper-individualistic capitalist systems, such as the art market, in which competition is a requirement for participation. In this way, collectives have served both the revolutionary and creative practices of Black, queer, and femme people across the diaspora. The artworks in Collective Arising—which includes textile, sculpture, glass, print, painting, photography, video, and installation—speak to this dual purpose at the core of the formation of artist collectives.

Art is Essential

For the “Art is Essential” show, I created my own take on all of the “plague journals” that artists are making. From the new weekly mainstay in the Sunday New York Times to many of my friends’ Instagram feeds, “plague journals” (and “protest signs”) will be the way history remembers 2020. We all seem to be counting. Counting the days, counting the stages of re-opening, and counting the number of Zoom meetings. Lots of counting.

Let Me Be a Witness

Let Me Be a Witness

With the rise of social media, the act of witnessing has become a catalyst of social change by using technology to transform passive observers into activists. Drawing the title from a traditional response of African-American church-goers “call to testify,” Let Me Be a Witness will exhibit work that reflect a variety of concerns that might otherwise never see the light of day. This show will exhibit what might be referred to as “witness art.” Witness art differs from merely political art by responding to specific events in the world. Witness art presents the observable within a framework of knowledgeable research. Witnessing connects subjective experience with objective truth.

Curator: Stacey Goodman
2nd Sat Reception: Saturday, March 10, 2018 - 7:00pm to 10:00pm
Gallery Hours (or by appointment): Wednesday-Saturday, 2-6pm

Including CREATIVE STATION, free all-ages art activities in our Classroom.
